Zion Williamson’s Debut

Zion Williamson has been one of the most hyped basketball players in recent memory. From his senior year in High School to his debut. Williamson has covered the internet with crazy dunks, blocks, and other athletic plays. Zion became the number one overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans and showed flashes of the star he would become in the preseason. His most impressive play was a dunk against the Atlanta Hawks. Williamson showed his power, strength, athleticism, and bounce on that play. The 6 foot 6, 284 pound, 19 year old made his NBA debut against the San Antonio Spurs. In the first half, you could see the rust. Zion looked slow and the game was moving too fast for him. But by the time the second half came around, Zion made the transition and caught up to the game. Zion finished with 22 points with limited minutes. Williamson had an unbelievable stretch where he scored 17 points in 3 minutes and went 4 for 4 on threes. Williamson almost won the game for the Pelicans but was taken out by coach Alan Gentry when it was just a one-score game. According to Marc Spears of ESPN before being subbed out Williamson said, “Coach, I can win the game for this team. Leave me in.” This shows an incredible amount of fight in the young man. The biggest thing that I took away from this game was Zion was not in shape. He was not 100% and was still finding ways to score down low, but when the defense started to clog the paint, Williamson did not feel the pressure. He was easing into threes and hitting them with ease. Zion silenced the haters with those three who said that Zion would not be able to develop a shot. Zion also showed off his incredible passing game. Zion looked incredible in those three minutes. Williamson does have a ways to go to get into NBA shape. This is a very promising start for the budding superstar. The greatest part of this game was Zion not shrinking in the moment. The moment wasn’t too big for him. I can’t wait to see more of Zion. He is the future of the league as long as he keeps himself in shape. I love what I saw in the fourth quarter and Zion has a chance to be an all-time great.
