College Football National Championship Game – Aftermath

The 2020 National Championship game between LSU and Clemson was one of the most hyped-up games of all time. LSU was the favorite coming into this game, but Clemson was no joke as they were the defending champions and had a 29 game winning streak. Clemson started this game very well. They stopped LSU on three different occasions forcing punts, but the offense couldn’t get it going. Clemson only scored 10 points off of those three punts. Clemson’s offense started to stall once they reached LSU’s side of the field. Joe Burrow and the Tigers inevitably got going and started to click offensively, and by half time it was 28-17 in favor of LSU. LSU’s dominance continued with 14 points in the second half compared to Clemson’s 8. The reason LSU won this game was because of the adjustments they made. LSU was shell shocked in the beginning. Burrow wasn’t able to pick up the blitzes and couldn’t deliver the ball accurately. LSU was able to adjust and took advantage of Ja’Marr Chase being one-on-one. Chase had two big plays that really got LSU going and into scoring position. Once LSU found the formula to beat the Clemson defense, they never let up and were able to win the game. The main reason I think Clemson lost this game was their offensive game plan. They did a good job of getting the ball to Travis Etienne, but they didn’t let Trevor Lawerence play like the NFL quarterback he is. Clemson, for the most part, has let Lawerence sit back in the pocket, read the defense, and deliver accurate passes. In the second half of the semi-final, Clemson started to use Lawerence’s athleticism and that change won them the game. But in the Championship game, Clemson tried to use Trevor Lawerence as if he is Johnny Manziel. They were making Lawerence roll and make throws in a tight window on the move. These passes, more likely than not, were barely inaccurate. Clemson also used an excess of trick plays and was sometimes too cute. Overall, LSU played like the better team, behind another splendid performance by the Heisman Trophy winner, and future number one overall pick Joe Burrow.
